Self Assessment

Directions: Prayerfully consider the way that Jesus made disciples and ask yourself the questions below. There is a PDF file available so that you may print out a copy of this assessment.
I.  Jesus told His disciples to follow Him alone; not other “Teachers” of questionable beliefs. Today’s “Teachers” include school teachers, coaches, curriculum, music, television, movies, peers, internet, games, books, etc.  These people and media teach and/or influence your child. According to Jesus, a student will become like their teacher. Matthew 10:24 "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master." Knowing that your children will become like their teachers, determine what teachers you will allow them to have.
  • Do you tell your children to follow you or to follow other “Teachers” ?
  • Do your children primarily follow you or do they primarily follow other “Teachers” ?
  • If your children are following other “Teachers,” how many are not Christian “Teachers” ?
  • What changes does the Lord want you to make in this area to better Disciple Like Jesus ?

II.  Jesus was with His disciples all day long, perhaps 80 to 100 hours per week.
Jesus was not merely with His disciples in His spare time. Mark 3:14 says "Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,..." The idea of "Quality Time" is one of the great lies of our times; our "microwave" approach to discipleship is not working. Like Jesus, parents who disciple like Jesus will sacrifice time, careers, hobbies, prestige, money, entertainment and possessions in order to be with their children. "Quantity Time" is what it takes to build deep relationships. Matthew 16:24 Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Are you willing to lose your life in order to follow Jesus and disciple your children? Decide if you are willing to make some sacrifices to be with your children more. Jesus said in Matthew 10:37-39 Jesus told us this, "He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it". Are you willing to lose your life in order to follow Jesus?
  • How many waking hours each week are you and your spouse with your children ?
  • Are you willing to sacrifice time, hobbies, money and/or possessions to be with your children ?
  • What are you willing to sacrifice to be with your children ?
  • What changes does the Lord want you to make in this area to better Disciple Like Jesus ?

III.  Jesus constantly taught scripture and demonstrated biblical principles to His disciples. For some parents this may be the most difficult aspect to making disciples like Jesus made disciples. How does an untrained person make disciples? The answer is found in Acts 4:13 "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus." Being uneducated and untrained is OK. But parents need to be with Jesus! If you will spend time with Jesus, and then begin reading God's word daily to your family, the Holy Spirit will take care of the rest.
  • How often each day do you read or teach scripture to your children ?
  • How often do you give testimonies to your children of the goodness of the Lord ?
  • How often do you show your children by example how to be a Disciple of Jesus ?
  • What changes does the Lord want you to make in this area to better Disciple Like Jesus?

IV.  Jesus sent His adult disciples out in two’s rather than alone, because of “wolves.”
When Jesus sent His disciples out, He did not send them out alone, and they were grown men! He sent them out with trusted adults because there were "wolves" in the world. Here is a partial list of today's "wolves:" Bullies, Peer Pressure, Child Abductions, Sexual Predators, Teen Rebellion, Drugs, Hookups, Partying, Homosexual Agenda, STD's, Teen Pregnancy, School Violence, Shootings, Pornography, Gangs, Rapes, Satanic Rituals and Worship, Suicide, 1 Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." Make yourself aware of the "wolves" that threaten your children and take measures to protect them. When you send your children out, send them out with a trusted adult.
  • Do you send your child anywhere alone ?
  • What are some of the “wolves” that are in your child’s world ?
  • What protections do you want to provide for your children ?
  • What changes does the Lord want you to make in this area to better Disciple Like Jesus ?
